I think the most critical thing most players miss in roguelikes is that they just play to fast, and don't carefully take each move when in dangerous situations. I think its a combination of just slowly learning the game (which you're already doing), and applying general rogue like strategy. Especially the ones with tons of ranged/magic mobs. 9) If your build feels weak, skip side areas. Keep +3/+4/+5 stuff around for transferring tables.
8) Keep enchantment scrolls/tables until you find a good weapon base that will carry you through the game. Don't use them just4fun, though, especially hellfire scrolls. If there is a chance to get killed next step, use scrolls/potions.
6) For all: Use skill points mainly for dmg.
